Greece: Public Power Corporation (PPC) gains market share for second consecutive month

Greek state-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC) has strengthened its position in the electricity market, increasing its market share to 54.6% in July, according to the latest monthly report from the Hellenic Energy Exchange (HEnEx). This marks a continued upward trend for PPC, driven by gains in the low and medium-voltage categories.

PPC’s market share rose from 52.53% in June, reflecting a notable expansion. Specifically, PPC increased its medium-voltage market share to 42.7% in July, up from 40.31% the previous month. Its low-voltage market share also grew, reaching 64.62% compared to 63.5% in June.

In contrast, the market share of independent electricity suppliers in Greece decreased to 45.4% in July, down from 47.47% in June. Despite this overall decline, there were no changes in the rankings among the independent suppliers.

Mytilineos remained the leading independent supplier, though its market share dropped to 14.54% in July from 15.05% in June. Heron followed with a reduced share of 10.19%, down from 11.24% in June. Elpedison, the third-largest independent supplier, saw its market share fall to 5.76% from 6.14%, while NRG’s share decreased slightly to 5.44% from 5.58%. Fysiko Aerio also experienced a decline, with its market share slipping to 3.02% from 3.19%.

Among other independents, Zenith saw a slight increase, raising its market share to 2.72% from 2.6%. Volterra’s market share fell marginally to 1.62% from 1.66%, while Volton’s share grew slightly to 1.38% from 1.34% in June.

The average wholesale electricity market price in July surged to €135.18 per MWh, a significant increase from €98.89 per MWh in June and notably higher than the €112.68 per MWh average in July 2023.
