Greece: Prime Minister reaffirms support for Trans Adriatic Pipeline expansion

On November 13, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated his government’s strong backing for the expansion of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), a key component of the Southern Gas Corridor. This vast network of 3,500 kilometers of pipelines delivers natural gas from the Caspian Sea to European nations. Speaking at the launch of Greece’s pavilion at the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Mitsotakis highlighted the country’s “strategic commitment” to ensuring regional energy security through the continued development of the TAP project, which was completed in 2020.

The TAP pipeline plays a pivotal role in transporting Azerbaijani natural gas to Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, and Southeastern Europe. Mitsotakis emphasized that expanding the pipeline is crucial to meet the increasing energy demands of the region. Looking ahead, the Prime Minister underscored Greece’s focus on advancing energy infrastructure, with particular attention to integrating electricity networks into the broader vision for a secure and sustainable regional energy future.
