Greece: PPC’s market share increases in June

State-controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC) has seen its retail electricity market share climb to 52.79% in June, its highest share since the beginning of the year, recovering from an unprecedented drop to below 50% (48.82%) in April. PPC’s rebound follows a high of 72.77% in January and is attributed to gains in the low and medium-voltage categories, as reported by Greek electricity transmission system operator ADMIE. This rebound coincided with a decrease in PPC’s market share in the high-voltage category.

Among independent electricity providers, Metlen (Mytilineos) led with a 14.97% market share in June, down from 16.99% in May. Heron’s share decreased to 10.82% from 11.64% the previous month. Elpedison’s market share slightly decreased to 5.8% from 5.85%, while NRG fell to 5.42% from 5.72%. Fysiko Aerio saw a minor reduction to 3.11% from 3.3%, whereas Zenith’s market share rose to 2.61% from 2.38%. Volterra’s share declined to 1.64% from 1.89%, while Volton’s increased to 1.28% from 1.2%.

In the high-voltage sector, Metlen maintained the lead with a 36% market share in June, down from 38.6% in May. PPC followed with a 25% share, down from 28%, while Heron’s market share rose to 24.6% from 21.2%.

Electricity demand in June increased by 33.5% to 4,745 GWh from 4,885 GWh in May, with a 25% year-on-year rise compared to June 2023. Total electricity generation also saw a significant increase of 33.23% from the previous year.
