Greece, PPC Renewables is planning to build a 500 MW solar power plant in western Macedonia

PPC Renewables, a renewables arm of Greek state -controlled Public Power Corporation (PPC), is planning to build a 500 MW solar power plant at its coal mining complex in western Macedonia.

CEO of PPC Renewables Konstantinos Mavros said that the solar project would be launched in the next six months. The solar complex will be built in Ptolemaida, where Greece’s largest lignite resources and power plants are located.

PPC is currently building unit V at TPP Ptolemaida , a coal-fired power plant which is planned to be switched to gas in four years. As part of its 2020- 2024 business plan, PPC is planning to shut down 3.4 GW of its coal-fired power plants by the end of 2023 and expand its renewable capacity by additional 1 GW. The massive RES project in western Macedonia will be unveiled by the end of 2022, with envisaged investment of 250 million euros.
