Greece: PPC plans to boost electricity capacity on Greek islands for summer tourist season

The Greek Public Power Corporation (PPC) is preparing to enhance electricity capacity on ten Greek islands, including Crete, to meet the increased energy demand during the summer tourist season. In a move to address this, PPC has applied to the energy regulatory authority RAAEY for electricity generation licenses totaling 95 MW.

Among the projects, a 35 MW initiative aims to address emergency energy needs on Crete following a March 3 explosion that knocked a 55 MW oil-fired unit offline. Additionally, transmission system operator ADMIE has requested approval for a 15 MW boost at the Hania substation to cover peak demand during July and August 2025. The interconnection between Crete and the mainland, currently in trial phase, is expected to be fully operational by the summer, improving the island’s energy security.

To further strengthen Crete’s electricity generation reserve, PPC is installing three new power generation units from Heron. Two of these units, being relocated from Viotia, will be completed by Easter, and the third is scheduled for installation by June, collectively adding 147 MW of capacity.

Other islands also set to receive power boosts in the summer months include Chios (15 MW), Santorini (14 MW), Samos (13 MW), Rhodes (11 MW), Karpathos (3 MW), Kythnos (2 MW), Patmos (1 MW), Amorgos (1 MW), and Symi (1 MW).
