Greece launches second auction for guarantees of origin in renewable energy

Greece is set to hold its second auction for guarantees of origin (GOs) for renewable electricity, offering certificates for solar and wind power, including output from wind farms on non-interconnected islands. The auction, organized by the Renewable Energy Sources Operator and Guarantees of Origin (DAPEEP), will provide three product categories: energy generated by onshore photovoltaic and wind facilities within the interconnected system, as well as wind power from non-interconnected islands.

Each guarantee corresponds to 1 MWh of energy, allowing suppliers to certify the source of their electricity for buyers. A total of 1.05 million GOs will be made available in this upcoming auction, translating to 1.05 TWh of energy produced in the first quarter of this year. The auction is scheduled for October 16.

The breakdown of available GOs includes 782,626 for photovoltaic energy, 257,021 for wind power, and 9,683 for wind energy from the non-interconnected system. In the previous auction, held on June 26, the weighted average prices for these certificates were EUR 0.37 for photovoltaics, EUR 0.41 for wind power, and EUR 0.38 for non-interconnected wind farms.

Companies already registered in the system have been invited to participate, with applications due by October 7. Additionally, a secondary market for GOs is planned to be established at the Hellenic Energy Exchange (HenEx). Proceeds from the sale of GOs will be directed to Greece’s renewable energy account, ELAPE, managed by DAPEEP, which is responsible for making payments to producers.
