Greece: Construction of SPP in Kozani launched

The Kozani solar power plant will be built in the Kozani region of Western Macedonia at a total cost of 130 million euros. German renewables company juwi started the construction of 204 MW solar power plant in Kozani in northwestern Greece, a project financed by the largest Greek oil refiner Hellenic Petroleum (ELPE) in its effort to move towards green energy production.

Once operational at end-2021, it is expected to generate 300 million kWh of electricity per year, or enough to cover the consumption of some 75,000 households. It will use Swan bifacial modules with transparent backsheet from DuPont and will be Europe’s largest such facility.

In February, ELPE Renewables, a subsidiary of oil refiner Hellenic Petroleum, agreed to purchase unfinished solar project from juwi. The plant in question is located near Kozani in northern Greece and, with installed capacity of 204 MW, it will be the largest solar power plant in the country. juwi already agreed with Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) that the purchase price of electricity produced at the facility will be 5.73 eurocents/kWh. Last month, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) said that it will invest 75 million euros in a bond placement by Greek oil refiner Hellenic Petroleum (ELPE) aimed at funding the company’s RES projects, namely 204 MW Kozani solar project in western Macedonia.
