Greece: Areas for the first offshore wind farms selected

Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (EDEY) selected five areas for the construction of the first offshore wind farms in Greece, with a total installed capacity of 2.1 GW.

The selected areas encompass the north and central Aegean Sea as well as the coast of Crete island. The North Aegean zone is located off Alexandroupoli, three central Aegean areas are close to the Greek mainland and in the region of the Dodecanese, while the last is located off the coast of Crete.

The area off Alexandroupoli will include offshore wind projects with a total capacity of 600 MW, 216 MW of which has already been secured by the Copelouzos Group in 2012. The three central zones will host 300 MW each, for a total capacity of 900 MW. The zone off Crete will also host 600 MW of offshore wind capacity.

However, licensing remains the main issue with offshore wind projects because it can take up to 10 years, so it is doubtful whether any project will be completed before 2030 to contribute to Greece’s target of 2.7 GW in offshore wind.
