Greece announced the first battery storage tender

Greece has launched its first standalone battery energy storage system tender. The country is targeting 400 MW of capacity, marking the first of several calls for tenders scheduled for this year.

The tender will be open until 10 July to award some 200 million euros in funding from Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Facility. Submitted proposals will be reviewed by 9 August. Prices should not exceed 115,000 per MWh per year, with the selected developers to receive a grant of up to 200,000 euros/MW to install the proposed capacity.

The winning projects, the individual capacity of which should be no higher than 100 MW, have to be commissioned by the end of 2025. Two more battery storage tenders are expected to be launched this year, in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. In 2022, Greece received approval from the European Commission to allocate some 340 million euros for the construction and operation of up to 900 MW of grid-connected energy storage systems.
