Preparatory work is underway for seabed surveys in advance of a major undersea electricity interconnection project between Greece and Italy. The initiative aims to boost the transmission capacity between the two countries from the current 500 MW to 1,500 MW.
These exploratory surveys are expected to begin soon and will be crucial in shaping the technical and financial framework of the project. The undersea cable, stretching approximately 240 kilometers, will connect the two nations via new coastal entry and exit points. Detailed mapping of the route will be determined during the survey phase.
Although an official schedule for the surveys has not been released, both Greek and Italian transmission system operators have emphasized the urgency of starting the process. Sources indicate that the two countries have agreed to share the survey costs equally. Prior to launching the next phase, the plan must be presented to national energy regulators in both countries for formal approval.
Once the final budget is established, Greece’s transmission system operator ADMIE is expected to include the interconnector in its upcoming 10-year investment plan for the 2026–2035 period.
