Greece and Egypt sign MoU to advance GREGY subsea electricity interconnection project

Greece’s and Egypt’s electricity transmission system operators, ADMIE and EETC, have formalized cooperation with ELICA, a subsidiary of the Copelouzos Group, through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the GREGY project.

The agreement advances the GREGY electricity interconnection project, a planned subsea link between Egypt and Greece, which is recognized as both a Project of Common and Mutual Interest and a priority investment under the EU’s Global Gateway program. With the MoU in place, technical and feasibility studies for the cable route can now proceed.

Greek officials stressed that the initiative supports the national strategy of creating new north-south energy routes, aligning with recent European policy directions. The interconnection is seen as a strategic asset for strengthening Greece’s role as an energy hub in southeastern Europe and enhancing regional energy security.

Under the agreement, ADMIE will provide EETC and ELICA with technical data and operational expertise to finalize project specifications. The operator also indicated potential participation in the construction phase. ELICA emphasized that the MoU establishes a structured framework for coordination, particularly regarding engineering design and project management standards.

Once operational, the GREGY link will transmit renewable electricity produced in Egypt to Greece, with a portion of the supply expected to flow onward to other European markets.
