Greece: Agreement on the development of floating SPPs

In order to develop floating solar power plants based on Ocean Sun’s proprietary technology in Greece and Cyprus, Norwegian company Ocean Sun signed an agreement with Greek MP Quantum Group. Ocean Sun CEO Borge Bjorneklett said that the technology will be used on lakes and reservoirs, as well as sheltered coastal regions, adding that some of the locations have already been identified, for example in the vicinity of energy-intensive industries such as cement production. MP Quantum will initiate pilot projects with 2 to 4 MW output as demonstrators later this year.

MP Quantum Group Chairman Yiannis Alafouzos said that floating solar is an excellent fit for the energy markets in Greece and Cyprus, with good irradiation, water resources and a commitment from authorities to push for the renewable energy transition. Ocean Sun’s technology also enables deployment along our widespread shores and island communities. Interest in floating solar power plants is soaring in Greece in recent years. GEK-Terna has announced the construction of large-scale floating solar systems at three reservoirs, a project worth 170 million euros, while PPC Renewables will deploy a 50 MW system.
