Expansion of NPP Kozloduy: Westinghouse secures contract for new AP1000 reactors

The project company NPP Kozloduy NPP New Builds has signed an extension of its Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract with Westinghouse Electric for the construction of units 7 and 8 at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant, utilizing Westinghouse’s AP1000 technology.

The collaboration between the two companies demonstrates their commitment to advancing the design phase in accordance with a National Assembly resolution from December 2023. Caretaker Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov emphasized that constructing new capacities at NPP Kozloduy will bolster Bulgaria’s long-term energy security and that of southeastern Europe. He noted that the project will generate significant economic value for Bulgaria, fostering local industry involvement throughout all stages. This initiative is one of the most important in Europe and will play a crucial role in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

In June 2023, Westinghouse Electric initially signed the FEED contract with NPP Kozloduy New Builds to evaluate the capabilities of Bulgarian industry and existing infrastructure at the plant to support the construction of two AP1000 reactors. Upon completion of this phase, Westinghouse is expected to provide comprehensive engineering services for the design, licensing, project management, and engineering implementation at NPP Kozloduy for the deployment of the new reactors.

Last month, Minister Malinov expressed his anticipation that the engineering contract will be finalized by the end of October, involving a consortium of Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Westinghouse Electric.
