European solar and wind energy trends: Production shifts in late February and early March

In the week of February 24, solar photovoltaic energy production increased for the second consecutive week in the Portuguese and French markets, rising by 9.5% and 26%, respectively. However, production declined in the Italian, Spanish, and German markets following increases in the previous week. Italy experienced the smallest drop at 3.5%, while Spain and Germany saw more significant declines of 15% and 29%, respectively.

Despite these fluctuations, the last week of February saw record-breaking photovoltaic energy production in Spain, Portugal, and France. On February 26, Spain and Portugal generated 134 GWh and 20 GWh, respectively, marking the highest daily output for February in their histories. Later that week, on February 28, France reached a record 89 GWh in solar generation. That same day, Italy produced 78 GWh, its second-highest February production on record, surpassed only by the 81 GWh generated on February 21.

Looking ahead to the week of March 3, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts increased solar energy production in Germany and Spain, while Italy is expected to see a continued decline in output.

In contrast, wind energy production increased across most major European markets in the last week of February. Italy experienced a dramatic 240% surge after three weeks of decline. Production also rose in France (5.8%), Portugal (33%), and Spain (40%), with France recording its second consecutive week of growth and Spain its third. The only major market to see a decline was Germany, where wind energy generation fell by 38%.

For the first week of March, AleaSoft forecasts further increases in wind energy production in Spain, Portugal, and Germany, while declines are expected in France and Italy, AleaSoft reports.
