European renewable energy update: Solar power breaks records, wind production set to decline

During the week of July 28, solar photovoltaic (PV) energy production increased across most major European electricity markets, marking a reversal from the declining trend observed the previous week. France led the surge with an 8.6% rise in solar output, followed by Germany with a 2.9% increase. Spain saw a modest 1.3% boost, while Italy recorded the smallest gain at 0.3%. Portugal stood out as the only major market to experience a drop in solar generation, decreasing by 6.7% for the second consecutive week.

Several markets also achieved new solar generation records for the month of August. On Friday, August 1, Spain, Italy, and Portugal each hit new highs in daily solar PV output for August, generating 196 GWh, 143 GWh, and 27 GWh, respectively. France followed with a new August record of 133 GWh on Saturday, August 2.

Looking ahead, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that solar PV production will continue to rise in the German, Italian, and Spanish markets during the week of August 4.

Wind energy production during the week of July 28 also saw substantial growth in several regions. Germany led with a 60% increase, while Spain and Italy followed with gains of 26% and 22%, respectively. Spain maintained its growth for a third straight week, and Germany and Italy each marked their second consecutive week of increases. However, wind output declined in Portugal and France by 21% and 25%, respectively. For France, this marked a second straight week of declines, while Portugal ended a two-week upward trend.

For the week of August 4, AleaSoft forecasts a drop in wind energy production across all analyzed European markets, AleaSoft reports.
