European electricity demand trends: Mixed movements amid temperature changes in late May

During the week of May 19, electricity demand declined in most major European markets compared to the previous week. Belgium recorded the largest decrease at 1.9 percent, while Italy and France saw the smallest reductions, both at 0.2 percent. In Portugal, electricity demand dropped by 0.6 percent.

In contrast, Germany, Great Britain, and Spain reversed the downward trend observed the previous week. Germany led the increases with a 0.9 percent rise in demand, followed by Great Britain with 0.5 percent and Spain with a 0.2 percent increase.

Average temperatures rose in most of the analyzed markets compared to the previous week. Portugal and Spain experienced the highest increases, with temperatures rising by 1.7°C and 1.5°C respectively. Germany recorded the smallest increase, at 0.2°C, while Italy saw a rise of 1.0°C. On the other hand, France, Great Britain, and Belgium experienced temperature declines, ranging from a 0.2°C drop in France to a 1.4°C drop in Belgium.

Looking ahead to the final week of May, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that electricity demand will rise in Spain, Portugal, and Italy. Meanwhile, demand is expected to decrease in Great Britain, Germany, France and Belgium, AleaSoft reports.
