Europe: Solar power hits records in mid-June; wind energy shows mixed trends

In the week of June 16, solar photovoltaic energy production rose in most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. The French, German, and Spanish markets continued their upward trends, with France experiencing the largest increase of 28%, followed by Germany at 12%, and Spain at 11%. The Portuguese market reversed its previous week’s decline, showing a 12% increase. Conversely, the Italian market saw a 6.5% decrease in solar photovoltaic energy production, breaking the upward trend observed earlier.

During this period, both the French and German markets set historic records for solar photovoltaic energy production. On June 16, France recorded its highest-ever daily solar output at 170 GWh. Germany surpassed its record on June 20, generating 469 GWh in a single day. Spain achieved its second-highest daily production on June 18 and 20, with 221 GWh each day. Additionally, Portugal reached a record high for solar photovoltaic production in June on June 20, with 28 GWh.

Looking ahead to the week of June 23, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts a reversal in the solar energy production trend. Production is expected to decline in the German and Italian markets, while remaining stable in Spain compared to the previous week.

Regarding wind energy during the week of June 16, production fell across most key European markets compared to the prior week. Germany experienced the largest drop of 50%, continuing its downward trend. Portugal’s wind energy output declined for the second consecutive week by 27%. Spain reversed its previous week’s increase with a 23% decrease. In contrast, Italy saw a 17% rise in wind energy production after three weeks of declines. France recorded a modest 5.1% increase.

For the week of June 23, AleaSoft forecasts a reversal of the recent downward trend in wind energy production. Increases are expected in the Iberian Peninsula, Germany, and France, while wind energy output in Italy is predicted to decrease, AleaSoft reports.
