Europe: Solar and wind energy production trends

In the week of August 19, 2024, solar energy production experienced a decline across most major European electricity markets. The most significant decreases were observed in the Portuguese and Spanish markets, with drops of 3.4% and 3.3%, respectively, continuing a downward trend for the second consecutive week. The German market also saw a reduction in solar energy production for the third consecutive week, though the decrease was more modest at 1.9%. Conversely, the French and Italian markets saw increases in solar energy production, with France experiencing a 14% rise and Italy a 3.3% increase.

Looking ahead to the week of August 26, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest a rebound in solar energy production in Germany, while Spain and Italy are expected to continue experiencing declines.

Wind energy production, on the other hand, saw significant increases in most major European markets during the week of August 19. Germany led the way with a substantial 161% increase, followed by France with a 76% rise, and Italy with a 21% boost. The Spanish market registered a smaller increase of 2.3%. Notably, the Portuguese market was the exception, with wind energy production decreasing by 15%.

Over the weekend of August 23-25, wind energy production reached notably high levels. On August 23, Germany produced 622 GWh of wind energy, a level not seen since mid-April. On August 24, France generated 181 GWh, marking the highest daily production since mid-June. On August 25, Spain produced 188 GWh, the highest since mid-July.

For the week of August 26, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts decreases in wind energy production in Germany, France, and the Iberian Peninsula, with Italy being the exception, where wind energy production is expected to continue increasing, AleaSoft reports.
