Europe: Solar and wind energy production soars in late January

In the week of January 27, solar photovoltaic energy production saw an increase across major European markets compared to the previous week. The Italian market continued its upward trend for the third consecutive week, while other markets reversed the downward trends from the prior week. Among these, Portugal recorded the largest increase at 105%, followed by Spain at 65%, France at 33%, and Germany at 31%. Italy had the smallest increase, at just 14%.

Notably, both the Iberian and French markets reached new records for solar photovoltaic energy production. On January 31, the Iberian markets hit their highest January production levels, with Portugal generating 17 GWh and Spain 119 GWh. In France, February 2 saw the highest solar energy production for a February day, reaching 62 GWh.

Looking ahead to the week of February 3, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts further increases in solar energy production in the German, Italian, and Spanish markets.

In wind energy, production rose in most major European markets during the final week of January. The Italian market saw the largest increase at 37%, recovering from two previous weeks of decline. France, Portugal, and Spain also continued their upward trends, with increases of 3.3%, 3.6%, and 22%, respectively. However, Germany experienced a slight decline of 0.9%.

Portugal and France set wind energy production records during the week. On January 27, Portugal reached its second-highest wind energy production for a January, generating 108 GWh, just behind the 110 GWh achieved on January 5. The next day, France reached its second-highest wind energy production ever, with 437 GWh, just short of the 441 GWh recorded on November 24, 2024. This also marked the highest wind energy output ever for a January day in France.

AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s wind energy production forecasts suggest a decline in production for the first week of February across major European markets, AleaSoft reports.
