Europe: Solar and wind energy production sees fluctuations in February

In the week of February 17, solar photovoltaic energy production increased across all major European electricity markets compared to the previous week, reversing the downward trend observed earlier. The German market led with a significant rise of 179%, while Italy and France saw increases of 17% and 11%, respectively. Spain’s solar production grew by 1.5%, and Portugal saw a modest increase of 0.9%.

During the third week of February, the German, Italian, and Portuguese markets set new records for solar photovoltaic energy production for the month of February. On February 19, the German market produced 211 GWh from solar energy, a level last reached in late September 2024. Two days later, on February 21, Italy’s market generated 81 GWh, the highest since mid-October 2024. On February 23, Portugal’s market produced 18 GWh, matching levels seen in late September 2024.

Looking ahead to the week of February 24, solar energy production is expected to decrease in Spain, Germany, and Italy, according to solar energy forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, reversing the previous week’s upward trend.

Wind energy production also saw an increase in most major European markets during the week of February 17, reversing the decline from the previous two weeks. France experienced the largest increase, up by 93%, while Germany and Spain saw rises of 35% and 8.6%, respectively. However, Italy and Portugal saw a drop in wind energy production, with declines of 63% and 4.4%, respectively.

For the week of February 24, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that wind energy production will rise in Italy and Spain but decrease in Germany, France and Portugal, AleaSoft reports.
