Europe sees mixed solar and wind energy trends in early September 2025

In the first week of September, solar photovoltaic energy production rose in the French, Italian, and Spanish markets compared to the previous week, reversing the downward trend seen in recent weeks. The French market recorded the largest increase at 6.3 percent, while the Spanish market saw the smallest rise at 1.1 percent. Italy reported a 4.7 percent increase. Meanwhile, the Portuguese and German markets experienced declines in solar generation for the second and third consecutive weeks, respectively. Portugal had the largest drop at 14 percent, and Germany reduced production by 5.1 percent.

During the week, several European markets reached record daily levels of solar photovoltaic energy production for September. In Spain, the peak occurred on Thursday, September 4, with 192 GWh generated. On Friday, September 5, France and Portugal recorded 131 GWh and 23 GWh, respectively, marking their highest daily outputs for September. On Saturday, September 6, Germany reached 361 GWh, and Italy reached 132 GWh of solar photovoltaic production in a single September day.

For the second week of September, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts an increase in solar photovoltaic generation in Spain and declines in Germany and Italy.

In the week of September 1, wind energy production increased in most major European markets compared to the previous week. Germany saw the largest increase at 60 percent, followed by France with a 38 percent rise, marking its second consecutive week of growth. Spain registered the smallest increase at 26 percent, continuing its upward trend for a third week. In contrast, Portugal and Italy reduced wind energy generation, with Portugal seeing the largest drop at 15 percent and Italy cutting production by 6.7 percent for the second consecutive week.

For the week of September 8, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projects decreases in wind energy production across the main European electricity markets, AleaSoft reports.
