Europe sees drop in solar and wind energy production in February 2025

In the week of February 10, solar photovoltaic energy production declined across major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. This downturn followed two consecutive weeks of increases in solar energy generation. The German and Portuguese markets saw the most significant drops, with a 38% decrease in Germany and 17% in Portugal, compared to the first week of February. Meanwhile, the Spanish market experienced the smallest decline at just 0.4%.

Despite a 2.8% overall drop in weekly production, the French market achieved a record for solar photovoltaic energy production on a February day. On Saturday, February 15, solar generation in France reached 79 GWh, surpassing the previous record of 68 GWh set on February 3.

Looking ahead to the week of February 17, solar photovoltaic energy production is expected to rise in Spain, Germany, and Italy, according to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s solar energy forecasts, reversing the previous week’s downward trend.

As for wind energy, production also declined across most major European markets in the week of February 10, continuing the downward trend of the previous week. The French market saw the largest decrease, with a 23% drop, while wind energy production fell by 13% in Italy and 10% in Germany. However, markets on the Iberian Peninsula saw an increase, with Portugal’s wind energy production rising by 40% and Spain’s by 12%.

In the week of February 17, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting forecasts an increase in wind energy production in France and Spain, but a decrease in Germany, Italy, and Portugal, AleaSoft reports.
