Europe: Electricity demand rises in Northern markets, falls in Southern markets in late September 2025

In the week of September 22, electricity demand rose in most major European markets compared to the previous week. The United Kingdom and France saw the largest increases, at 5.6% and 5.3% respectively, continuing the upward trend observed the prior week. Belgium recorded the smallest increase, 2.2%, reversing the downward trend from the previous two weeks.

In contrast, Southern European markets experienced week-on-week declines. Spain registered the largest drop, 11%, while Italy and Portugal saw decreases of 5.4% and 3.7%, respectively. Italy continued its downward trend for the second consecutive week, while the Iberian markets reversed the previous week’s upward trend.

During this period, average temperatures fell across the analyzed markets, with drops ranging from 3.2 °C in Italy to 6.4 °C in France.

Looking ahead to the week of September 29, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projects that electricity demand will decrease in most major European markets, although the British market is expected to see a rise in consumption, AleaSoft reports.
