Europe: Electricity demand rises in major markets despite declines in Germany and Italy

During the week of September 30, electricity demand rose across most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. The French and Portuguese markets saw the largest increases, with demand growing by 5.0% and 4.6%, respectively. Other markets, including Spain, the UK, and the Netherlands, experienced smaller rises, ranging from 0.8% in Spain to 2.4% in the Netherlands. The Belgian market had the smallest increase at 0.4%. Notably, the French and British markets have seen demand rise for three consecutive weeks, while the Dutch market has experienced growth for the second week in a row.

In contrast, demand fell in Germany and Italy, decreasing by 2.6% and 0.6%, respectively. In Germany, the decline was influenced by the nationwide holiday for German Unity Day on Thursday, October 3. Italy continued its downward trend for the fifth straight week.

Average temperatures also dropped in most of the analyzed markets, with decreases ranging from 0.1 °C in Great Britain to 3.7 °C in Germany. The Iberian Peninsula was an exception, as average temperatures increased slightly, with Portugal up by 0.9 °C and Spain by 0.5 °C.

Looking ahead to the second week of October, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s demand forecasts indicate that demand is expected to rise in the markets of Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, and Italy. Conversely, demand is projected to decline in Portugal, Spain, France, and the Netherlands, AleaSoft reports.
