Europe: Electricity demand drops in early July amid cooling temperatures, mixed forecasts for mid-July

During the week of July 7, electricity demand declined across the main European electricity markets compared to the previous week, reversing the upward trend seen in the prior period. Italy experienced the largest drop after six consecutive weeks of growth, with demand falling by 12%. Other markets saw decreases ranging from 1.3% in Great Britain to 7.8% in France.

At the same time, average temperatures decreased in most of the analyzed markets, reducing cooling needs and consequently lowering electricity demand. Temperature drops ranged from 2.3°C in Spain to 4.5°C in Germany. However, Great Britain experienced a temperature increase of 1.0°C compared to the previous week.

Looking ahead to the week of July 14, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that electricity demand will rise in the Italian, Spanish, and British markets. Conversely, demand is expected to continue declining in Belgium, Portugal, and Germany. In France, demand is forecasted to remain steady compared to the previous week, AleaSoft reports.
