Europe: Electricity demand declines in early August

During the week of August 5, electricity demand fell across most major European markets compared to the previous week. Italy experienced the largest decline, with a 12% drop, while the Netherlands saw the smallest decrease at 1.4%. These markets continued their downward trends, marking the third consecutive week for Italy and the fifth for the Netherlands. In contrast, electricity demand rose in Belgium and Germany, with increases of 2.1% and 0.1% respectively, continuing an upward trend for the second straight week in both countries.

Average temperatures in the second week of August were generally cooler than the previous week across most of the analyzed markets. Temperature decreases ranged from 0.1°C in Spain to 1.3°C in Great Britain. However, Germany and the Netherlands bucked this trend, with average temperatures rising by 0.1°C and 0.4°C, respectively. In Portugal, temperatures remained consistent with the first week of August.

Looking ahead, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts that electricity demand will continue to decrease in most of the major European markets during the week of August 12. Demand is expected to drop in Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and Portugal, while slight increases are anticipated in the Netherlands and Great Britain, according to AleaSoft.
