Energy production trends in Europe: Solar and wind generation surges in early January 2025

In the week of January 6, there was notable variability in energy production across different European markets. Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy generation increased in Germany and France, reversing the declines of the previous week. Germany saw the largest increase, with a 33% rise, while France experienced a more modest 16% increase. In contrast, the Iberian and Italian markets reported declines for the second consecutive week. Spain had the smallest drop, at 2.8%, while Portugal and Italy experienced larger reductions, at 22% and 24%, respectively.

On Sunday, January 12, both the French and Portuguese markets set records for solar PV production. France achieved its highest ever January solar PV generation, reaching 51 GWh, while Portugal produced 12 GWh, marking its third-highest January total for solar PV.

Looking ahead to the week of January 13, solar energy production is expected to increase in Germany, Italy, and Spain, according to forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting. Meanwhile, wind energy production rose across most major European markets in the second week of 2025. Italy experienced the largest increase, with a 153% surge, while Germany had the smallest growth at 0.6%. France saw an 11% increase in wind energy generation, and Iberia (Spain and Portugal) experienced significant increases, with Portugal up by 41% and Spain by 94%.

On January 6, France also recorded its highest ever wind energy production for a January, generating 416 GWh. However, for the third week of 2025, wind energy production is expected to decline in all major European markets, according to AleaSoft’s forecasts, AleaSoft reports.
