EDF advances nuclear cooperation with Serbia

Marie Agnes Berche, Director of Business Development for International Nuclear Development at EDF, announced that Serbia is progressing in nuclear energy cooperation with the French company. A workshop on human resource development has already been held, and another session on integrating Serbian industry into nuclear projects is scheduled this week.

EDF signed an agreement with Serbia’s Ministry of Mining and Energy in August 2023, focusing on training, public engagement, and supply chain development. In April 2024, EDF and the Serbian Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on energy transition, specifically in hydropower and nuclear energy. EDF has since contracted French company Egis to design a development plan and evaluate nuclear technologies.

A project roadmap will be submitted to the Serbian Government in April, outlining options for small modular reactors or a large-scale nuclear plant. Serbia must establish key infrastructure, including a nuclear regulatory body, which could take two to three years. Public acceptance and workforce training are also critical aspects of the project.

EDF, a global leader in nuclear power, supports Serbia’s energy independence and aims to provide expertise in the sector’s development.
