Easter week leads to lower electricity demand across most European markets

During the third week of April, electricity demand decreased across most major European markets. Spain saw the largest decline, with a 7.1% drop, followed by Germany at 4.3%, Belgium at 2.1%, Great Britain at 1.8%, and Italy at 0.9%. On the other hand, electricity demand increased in France and Portugal, with rises of 3.5% and 1.1%, respectively.

Higher average temperatures compared to the previous week contributed to the decline in demand in some markets. Germany, Italy, and Belgium all saw temperature increases—3.3°C, 3.0°C, and 1.3°C, respectively. In contrast, temperatures in Great Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal were lower, ranging from a 0.3°C drop in Great Britain to a 3.5°C decrease in Portugal.

The decrease in work activity during Easter week contributed to lower electricity demand in several countries, while in Portugal and France, the cooler temperatures led to higher demand.

Looking ahead, according to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s demand forecasts, most European markets will see a further decline in demand during the week of April 21, except for Spain, where a recovery in demand is expected, AleaSoft reports.
