Croatia: Trial operation for SPP on Vis island

A contract on a temporary inclusion of the facility to the national electricity system during its trial operation was signed between Croatian electricity market operator HROTE and state-owned power utility HEP.

HEP’s 3.5 MW solar power plant on the Vis island will be the first solar facility in Croatia which will sell electricity on the market, without receiving feed-in tariffs from the Government.

The construction of the plants started in November last year. Estimated annual electricity generation is about 5 GWh, which is enough to cover the needs of 1,600 households. The project was initially conceived by Koncar KET, but it was later bought by state-owned HEP.

Last month, HEP launched the construction of solar power plant on the island of Cres. Installed capacity of the plant is 6.5 MW and with annual electricity generation of 8.5 million kWh it will be the largest operational solar power plant in the country. Estimated value of the project is around 5.4 million euros. HEP is planning to invest around 100 million euros in the construction of solar power plants between 2019 and 2023.

In early July, HEP published a public call to all interested partners for expression of interest in development and sale of renewable energy sources (RES) projects. On the basis of 2019 public call results, HEP signed agreements with 11 local government units on the development of solar power plant projects with the total power of 120 MW.
