Croatia: JANAF to double Omisalj terminal storage capacity with €30 million expansion

Croatia’s state-owned oil transportation company JANAF has secured a construction permit to build additional fuel storage tanks at its Omisalj Terminal. A public tender for the project is expected to launch in early August.

Valued at over 30 million euros and fully financed from JANAF’s own resources, this marks the company’s largest single investment in recent years. The expansion is part of a broader effort to increase storage capacity in response to ongoing high demand.

Currently, JANAF operates seven tanks at Omisalj with a total capacity of 80,000 cubic meters, plus 35 tanks at the Zitnjak Terminal with 162,000 cubic meters. The addition of four new tanks at Omisalj, adding another 80,000 cubic meters, will effectively double the terminal’s capacity and boost JANAF’s total derivative storage by about one-third.

This project also offers significant opportunities for local construction firms, as few investments of this magnitude occur in the domestic market. JANAF’s decision aligns with its strategy to reinforce its role as a key energy hub, addressing the needs of current partners and preparing for future growth along the Vertical Corridor.

By expanding storage capacity, JANAF aims to enhance energy security for Croatia and its Central European neighbors while strengthening its standing with both domestic and international stakeholders.
