Croatia: INA begins geothermal drilling at Lescan GT-1 well near Djurdjevac for sustainable energy production

Croatian oil company INA has commenced exploratory drilling at the Lescan GT-1 geothermal well near Djurdjevac as part of its ongoing research in the Lescan geothermal water exploration area. The goal is to confirm the existence and characteristics of the geothermal reservoir and assess its potential for electricity generation. If the tests show promising results, INA plans to drill a second well and develop a comprehensive plan for electricity production from geothermal sources.

The total investment for the first two wells is estimated at 20 million euros, with the overall project value potentially exceeding 170 million euros. INA received the exploration permit in October 2023 and quickly secured the necessary approvals for drilling. The company, with over 70 years of experience in oil and gas exploration, sees geothermal energy as a logical step towards sustainable electricity generation.

Drilling at the Lescan GT-1 well aims to reach a geothermal reservoir at depths of 3,700 to 4,200 meters, with a reservoir temperature around 200°C and a surface geothermal water temperature of approximately 180°C. INA also plans to explore the possibility of supplying thermal energy to the local community and industries in Djurdjevac.
