Croatia: Electricity production drops in February 2025 amid increased imports

According to the latest short-term energy statistics from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, Croatia’s net electricity production in February 2025 totaled 1,185 GWh, marking a 6.8% decrease compared to 1,272 GWh produced in February 2024.

Hydropower plants contributed the largest share, generating 499 GWh or 42.1% of total electricity. Thermal power plants followed with 344 GWh (29%), while wind farms produced 223 GWh (18.8%). Solar power accounted for 44 GWh or 3.7% of the total.

During the same month, electricity imports rose to 1,000 GWh, a 13.1% increase from 884 GWh in February 2024. On the other hand, electricity exports dropped to 568 GWh, down 16.2% compared to 678 GWh the previous year.

In terms of hydrocarbon output, Croatia produced 55 million cubic meters of natural gas, up 3.8% from February 2024. Natural gas imports totaled 175 million cubic meters, slightly lower by 0.5% year-on-year.

Crude oil production declined to 35,000 tons, a 10.3% drop compared to the previous year. However, production of petroleum products surged to 273,000 tons in February 2025, a significant jump from just 23,000 tons recorded in February 2024, largely due to the previous year’s turnaround at the Rijeka refinery.
