Local subsidiary of US company ContourGlobal, the operator of coal-fired thermal power plant Maritsa East 3, said that the plant has generated almost 12 % of electricity produced in Bulgaria in 2021.

The statement from the company said that the electricity produced by the plant was enough to cover the needs of 1.235 million Bulgarian households for the whole year.

ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3 owns and operates the first lignite coal-fired thermal power plant in southeastern Europe, which operates in full compliance with the highest European standards for occupational safety and environmental protection. The 908 MW plant generates about 10% of the electricity in Bulgaria, using local energy sources and thus contributes to guaranteeing the energy security and independence of the country.

The plant produced 11 % of Bulgaria’s electricity in 2020 (4.55 TWh).

The statement from the company said that the price for February should be around 58.4 euros/MWh, which is 16.7 % lower compared to the
price approved for January – 68.1 euros/MWh, which was an increase of 30.4 % compared to December 2021.

In March 2020, Bulgargaz and Gazprom Export have finalized an agreement on 40.3 % reduction of the price at which Russia supplies natural gas to Bulgaria, backdated to 5 August 2019. Bulgaria was the last of eight EU Member States of Eastern Europe to strike a deal on a price cut with Gazprom, in the wake of a settlement reached between the European Commission and the Russian monopolist on an anti-trust investigation.

The agreement with Gazprom prompted the change in determining regulated wholesale gas prices, which is now set on monthly, rather than quarterly basis.
