US energy experts have met with the management of TPP Bobov Dol to discuss options for accelerating the plant’s environmental transition. Deputy CEO Ivelin Dimitrov hosted the talks with representatives from the energy solutions company Emtel.
Discussions focused on gas-fired cogeneration as a quick pathway away from coal, with proposals for units that could replace part of the plant’s thermal load with natural gas while supplying both electricity and heat. Emtel also presented a next-generation battery concept for a nearby storage facility. These proposed batteries are fully recyclable, designed for vertical stacking, and require at least twice less land than conventional installations.
The plant’s management expressed openness to adopting advanced technologies and drawing on external expertise to develop a long-term sustainability strategy. Emtel specializes in enhancing renewable energy integration through its ELDES energy storage systems, which feature a non-lithium design tested in real-world conditions and aimed at meeting large-scale reliability requirements.
In financial results for the first half of 2025, TPP Bobov Dol reported a net profit of around 150,000 euros, compared to 380,000 euros in the same period of 2024. Total revenues rose by 68.8% year-on-year to 108.3 million euros, while total expenditures increased by 69.6% to 108.15 million euros.
TPP Bobov Dol is a 630 MW coal-fired power plant located in southwestern Bulgaria. Commissioned in 2000, it was privatized in 2008 and is fully owned by the local consortium Energy MK.
