Bulgaria, TPP AES Galabovo recorded an all-time high annual electricity generation in 2021

AES Bulgaria, local subsidiary of US-based AES Corporation, said that its thermal power plant AES Galabovo recorded an all-time high annual electricity generation of 3.3 million MWh in 2021.

The statement from the company said that the electricity produced by the plant’s two units in 2021 was 20 % above the 2020 generation levels and the highest since the start of their commercial operation in 2011. In December alone, the coal-fired power plant produced 356,000 MWh of electricity, almost 50 % more compared to the previous month.

TPP AES Galabovo provided over 9 % of all electricity consumed in Bulgaria in 2021.

In 1999, US AES Corporation purchased the majority stake in Bulgaria’s Maritsa East 1 power plant, subsequently renamed AES Galabovo in
2009. AES completed the full acquisition of the thermal power plant from Ireland’s Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited in 2005.
