Bulgaria: Solar energy production reached 1.56 TWh in 2023

Bulgarian Energy and Water Regulatory Commission said that electricity produced by photovoltaics increased by 141%, to 1,558,739 MWh in 2023, according to the regulator’s annual report.

The report outlines the trend for sustained growth in the generation of green electricity and the reduction in production from lignite thermal power plants by 46% and by black and brown coal thermal power plants by 51%. Until the third quarter of the state thermal power plant “Maritsa-East 2” realizes 2.4 million MWh of electricity, which is almost 60% less compared to the quantities sold in the third quarter of 2022.

In its annual report, KEVR reports a drop in the production of electricity from hydropower power plants – by one-fifth, due to insufficient rainfall.

The production of nuclear power plants is almost constant – there was a slight decrease of 0.23%, which is clear from the KEVR report.

In terms of installed capacities, a sharp increase in new photovoltaic power plants is reported, and at the end of 2023, they reached 1.120 MW, up from 548 MW in the previous year. The total number of solar power plants in the country is over 3,000 MW.

The total electricity generated by producers connected to the transmission network for 2023 is 32,501,269 MWh and is 22% less than the net electricity generated in 2022, which is 41,900,158 MWh, the report also states.
