Unit 6 of Bulgaria’s only nuclear power plant, Kozloduy, continues to experience issues with one of its steam generators, according to Nuclear Regulatory Agency Chair Tsanko Bachiyski. The problem affects just one of the eight generators in operation, but repeated cracks have been detected in a particular section.
To resolve the issue, NPP Kozloduy has launched a specialized program to determine the root cause. The plan includes testing several potential explanations, with inspections and checks carried out each time the unit is taken offline. Every shutdown is performed as a precaution to maintain both plant safety and the stability of electricity supply.
The unit was most recently taken out of operation on 17 July for scheduled maintenance after a leak was detected in the third steam generator. During this downtime, necessary repairs and safety measures were completed to ensure reliable operation through the summer. The unit was reconnected to Bulgaria’s national grid on 5 August.
