Bulgaria, Hydropower production down 33.8% in 2022

Electricity production in hydropower plants in the period from 1 January to 8 May 2022 decreased by 33.8% compared to the same period last year, according to the latest report on the energy balance of the Electricity System Operator (ESO), published on ESO website.

In the same period, electricity production in Bulgaria increased by 17.4%. From the beginning of the year to May 8, 19.87 million MWh of electricity was produced, compared to 16.92 million MWh in the same period last year.

Electricity consumption in the country in the period from January 1, 2022 to May 8, 2022 increased by 1.8% annually, according to ESO data. From the beginning of the year to May 8, 15.09 million MWh of electricity was consumed, while in the same period in 2021, consumption amounted to 14.82 million MWh.

The data show that the balance of exports and imports increased by 127.6% on an annual basis.

The share of base power plants in the energy balance increased by 26.6% annually. From the beginning of the year to May 8, the base plants produced 16.9 million MWh, compared to 13.35 million MWh a year earlier.

ESO records an increase in the share of renewable energy sources in the transmission network by 23.45%, as well as in the distribution network – by 18.6%.
