Bulgaria: Growth in electricity and solid fuels amid mixed trends in gas and fuels in July

In July 2024, Bulgaria’s energy sector showed varied trends across different resources. Electricity production surged by 42.1% from June, reaching 3,500 GWh, while electricity consumption rose by 10.7% to 2,762 GWh. In contrast, natural gas consumption fell by 15.8% to 154 million cubic meters, with production remaining steady at 1 million cubic meters.

Year-on-year comparisons reveal that electricity production increased by 4.3% and consumption by 4% compared to July 2023. However, natural gas consumption dropped by 14% over the same period.

In the fuels sector, production of unleaded petrol decreased by 2.1% to 140,000 tons, while consumption decreased slightly by 1.7% to 57,000 tons. Diesel production held steady at 299,000 tons, but consumption jumped by 27% to 259,000 tons.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) saw a significant rise in both production, which increased by 8.3% to 13,000 tons, and consumption, which grew by 23.1% to 48,000 tons.

Lastly, solid fuels production surged 2.6 times, reaching 1,465 thousand tons, and consumption increased 2.5 times to 1,503 thousand tons.

Overall, July 2024 illustrated a complex landscape in Bulgaria’s energy production and consumption, with notable growth in electricity and solid fuels, alongside shifts in gas and fuel usage.
