Bulgaria: Electricity production surges by 22.16% in early 2025

According to data from Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system operator ESO, the country’s electricity production between 1 January and 2 March 2025 rose by 22.16% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 8.63 TWh.

Electricity consumption also increased by 11.4%, totaling 8.28 TWh. As a result, Bulgaria maintained a net electricity export balance of 0.35 TWh.

Baseload power plants, including coal and nuclear facilities, generated 7.25 TWh of electricity, marking a 25% increase compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, electricity production from renewable energy sources (RES) continued to grow. The share of RES in the transmission network increased by 16.94% to 489.5 GWh, while RES generation in the distribution network rose by 16.54% to 481.4 GWh.
