Bulgaria, Decrease in electricity production by 11 percent in 2023, to 7.34 TWh

Bulgaria’s import-export balance of electricity in the period from January 1 to February 19, 2023 decreased by 45 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, according to data published by the Electric Power System Operator (ESO). At the same time, electricity production in Bulgaria decreased by 11 percent.

Electricity production from January 1 to February 19 was 7,343,602 MWh, compared to 8,264,154 MWh in the same period in 2022.

Electricity consumption in the country decreased by 1.5 percent in the observed period. From the beginning of the year to February 19, a total of 6,326,670 MWh was consumed, while consumption in the same period in 2021 amounted to 6,422,184 MWh.

The share of base plants in the energy mix of the country decreased by 11 percent. This year, base power plants produced a total of 6,370,725 MWh, compared to 7,142,427 MWh in 2022.

The share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network increased by 13.5 percent, while the share of RES in the distribution network decreased by about 3 percent. The production of hydroelectric power plants in the observed period decreased by 28 percent.
