The value of electricity exports from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first quarter of this year amounted to 406 million KM (215 million euros), according to the BiH Statistics Agency.
This is 72.1% more than in the same period last year when exports amounted to 233.6 million KM (124 million euros).
At the same time, the value of imports increased two and a half times, to 44.4 million KM (23.5 million euros), from 17.4 million KM (9 million euros) in the first quarter of last year.
The high value of exports and imports of electricity is a consequence of rising prices since September 2021 due to the global crisis, although the production results in Bosnia and Herzegovina are not ideal.
Poor hydrological conditions at the beginning of the year affected the lower production of electricity in hydroelectric power plants.
February was especially bad when the gross electricity production amounted to 1,393 GWh, which is 28.5% less than in the same month last year. In January, production amounted to 1,682 GWh, which is 30% less on an annual basis.
Gross production of hydropower plants in February amounted to 440 GWh and decreased by 53.6% compared to the same month last year. In January, the production in HPPs was 605 GWh, which is 31.2% less than last year’s 880 GWh.
In February, the share of hydropower plants in total electricity production fell from 36% in January to 31.6%, so thermal power plants carried a higher burden in production.
Energy statistics for March are not yet available.
The value of electricity exports in 2021 reached 830 million KM (440 million euros), which was a record result.
