Bosnia and Herzegovina: SHPP regulations amendments

After publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), amendments to the regulations on hydropower plants and facilities, which stipulate that for all hydro facilities with installed capacity of more than 150 kW it is necessary to perform an environmental impact assessment study, will come into force. The amendments also stipulate that the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism becomes the body responsible for the issuing of environmental permits for hydro projects.

In late 2020, FBiH Government said that, as of 1 January 2021, subsidies for SHPPs will no longer be granted and funds allocated for this purpose will be transferred to other means of electricity production from renewable sources. Other adopted measures include mandatory application for environmental permit for projects above 150 kW, establishment of expert commission which will evaluate these applications and required minimum flow of water for the construction of such facilities.
