Bosnia and Herzegovina: Severe snowstorm causes widespread power outages affecting over 200,000 consumers

According to Bosnia’s state-owned power utility, ERS, several power outages have affected over 200,000 consumers due to severe weather conditions. Currently, 8310 kV and 20 kV power lines are out of service across 10 field units, impacting 65,886 consumers in those areas. The failure of four 110 kV power lines, including those with downed poles, and the 110/kV substations managed by Elektroprijenos BiH have left the city of Doboj and the municipalities of Teslic, Stanari, and Petrovo without electricity.

Additionally, the failure of the 110 kV power line from Tuzla, caused by a faulty switch, has resulted in a power outage in the city of Bijeljina, affecting around 50,000 consumers. Another 10,000 consumers in four other field units are also without power, bringing the total number of affected consumers in the area covered by Elektro-Bijeljina to about 60,000.

The severe snowstorm that struck the region caused the failure of major power lines, including the 110 kV Brcko 2 – Bijeljina 3 and 110 kV Ugljevik – Bijeljina 2 lines, leading to a blackout in the Semberija region. Furthermore, a malfunction on a 110 kV power line under Elektroprijenos BiH’s jurisdiction has left the areas of Maglaj, Zavidovici, Tesanj, and Doboj Jug completely without electricity, impacting about 39,000 consumers. Once repairs to the power line are completed, EPBiH will resume efforts to restore power.

The situation in Tuzla Canton, particularly in Gracanica, Gradacac, Tuzla, Celic, Srebrenik, Lukavac, Sapna, and Kladanj, remains challenging, despite continuous work by Elektrodistribucija Tuzla crews. In contrast, conditions in the Una-Sana Canton have been gradually stabilizing since last night, with power restored to many consumers.

EPBiH teams are working intensively to resolve power issues in Travnik, Novi Travnik, Donji Vakuf, Bugojno, Fojnica, Konjic, Jablanica, and Mostar. As of the latest updates, more than 200,000 consumers are still without electricity across the region.
