Bosnia and Herzegovina reports decline in gross electricity production in May 2025 amid shift in energy mix

According to the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), the country’s gross electricity production in May 2025 amounted to 830 GWh, down from 1,072 GWh in the same month last year.

Hydropower plants contributed 36.3% to the total gross production, thermal power plants accounted for 51.8%, and solar and wind power plants made up 11.9%.

Net production from hydropower plants reached 284 GWh in May 2025, marking a 48.8% increase compared to May 2024. Thermal production, however, declined by 43.2% to 384 GWh. Electricity generation from renewables (wind and solar) rose significantly by 75%, totaling 98 GWh.

Electricity imports increased by 34% to 500 GWh in May 2025, compared to 373 GWh the previous year, while exports fell by 10.6% to 489 GWh from 547 GWh in May 2024.

Lignite production decreased by 47.2% to 293,000 tons in May 2025, whereas brown coal output rose by 14.9% to 440,000 tons.

Natural gas imports grew by 5.4% year-on-year, totaling 8.84 million cubic meters in May 2025, compared to 8.39 million cubic meters in May 2024.
