Bosnia and Herzegovina: Neretva river floods prompt debris cleanup efforts at hydropower plants

Recent floods in the Neretva River area have caused substantial damage to auxiliary structures of hydropower plants and led to the accumulation of significant debris in the reservoirs. In the Grabovica reservoir alone, approximately 50,000 cubic meters of debris have been deposited, with more continuing to arrive.

According to a statement from the state-owned power utility EPBiH, the company plans to begin removing the flood debris as soon as conditions permit. Despite the challenges, increased measures and the professionalism of employees helped prevent major damage to the main equipment at the Jablanica, Grabovica, and Salakovac hydropower plants.

The situation in the Neretva River basin is stabilizing, with all dams deemed completely secure. EPBiH is actively managing the hydropower system to normalize production levels. In light of forecasted rainfall in the coming days, the utility has mobilized all available personnel and technical resources to ensure the stable operation of the hydropower plants and maintain a reliable electricity supply.
