Bosnia and Herzegovina doubles coal exports in early 2025

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) significantly increased its coal exports in the first quarter of 2025, with volumes more than doubling compared to the same period last year. Official data reveals that between January and March, the country exported 234,301 tons of coal, valued at 20 million euros. This marks a sharp rise from the first quarter of 2024, when exports totaled 117,418 tons worth 8 million euros.

Brown coal remained the dominant export, generating 18.7 million euros in revenue during the quarter. The vast majority of this was shipped to neighboring Serbia, continuing a long-standing trade pattern between the two countries.

This spike in coal exports follows a trend that began in 2022, when BiH’s coal exports reached an all-time high of 984,943 tons, valued at 78.6 million euros. In stark contrast, the year before—2021—saw just 195,000 tons exported, bringing in 13.5 million euros.

The data underscores BiH’s role as a key coal supplier in the region, even as many European countries move away from fossil fuels in favor of cleaner energy sources.
