Albania launches licensing process for Fier 170 MW gas-fired power plant

The Albanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ERE) has initiated the formal licensing process for Fier Thermoelectric, a company established by the Greek gas firm DEPA Trade. The license concerns the development of a new 170 MW gas-fired thermal power plant near the city of Fier in southwestern Albania.

As part of the regulatory procedure, ERE has opened a public consultation period, inviting stakeholders to submit written feedback or comments on the licensing process by July 8. This marks a significant step forward for the project, which already received construction approval from the Albanian Government in December. The power plant is expected to begin electricity production within the next three years.

Strategically located near an outlet of the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP)—a key infrastructure route transporting natural gas from Azerbaijan to European markets via Albania—the plant will benefit from direct access to natural gas, streamlining supply logistics and reducing costs.

Fier Thermoelectric, officially established in Albania in 2022, is a fully private initiative led by DEPA Trade. The project aims to increase Albania’s domestic electricity generation capacity while supporting energy diversification through cleaner, gas-based power production.
