Albania: KESH purchasing electricity

This is the first purchase procedure launched by Albanian Power Corporation (KESH), after the one announced in May and subsequently canceled. KESH has returned to electricity procurement tenders and announced that it has purchased 2,400 MWh for 14-21 June delivery. The weighted purchase price of was 28.55 euros/MWh.

KESH last bought electricity through tenders in December last year. Poor hydro conditions as well as interventions in hydropower plants due to the dam safety project have led KESH to focus on optimizing by purchasing electricity in small quantities outside peak hours at cheaper prices and selling the part it produces itself in peak hours at more expensive prices.

In the first quarter of 2020, domestic electricity production reached 1,546 GWh from 1,281 GWh produced in the first quarter of 2019, marking an increase in production by 20.7 %.

State-owned hydropower plants produced 48 % of the amount, privately-owned hydropower plants produced 51.6 %, while other renewable producers covered the remaining 0.4 %.
